Construction News from the Pastor (updated December 16, 2014)

bilingual under constructionSisters and brothers:

As we come to the close of the first phase of the re-construction and renovations in time to have our Sanctuary and Social in use for Christmas and New Year’s, I am very grateful to everyone who has helped in one way or another. To all who have contributed to the “Moving Forward In Hope” Capital Campaign I thank you for your support.

This is truly an evolutionary work in progress. It is not an easy process. I think it’s easier starting with an empty lot and building from there. Archbishop Wilton Gregory authorized us to begin construction on September 17, 2014. Over these three months under the guidance of Mr. Randy Hood and the Catholic Construction Services we have undertaken a design-build method utilizing the Moeller Purcell Construction Company and the Smith Boland Architects.

Phase I: Roof Renovation – Fall 2014

  • The roofs are now reconstructed with great conviction that water intrusion will be a reality of the past and not of the present nor the future.
  • The interior perimeter ceiling and new lighting seems to have made up for the natural light that we have lost. We have gained better control over our air conditioning in that we will no longer have the sun magnified through the perimeter glass roofing.
  • We have sheet rocked the one wall behind the Altar and the Ambo to set it off from the other walls of the Stations of the Cross.
  • The interior renovations have involved a fine Building Committee of parishioners who are lending their expertise from their own professions: roofing, engineering, interior decorating, etc.

Phase II: Church renovation (Winter 2015)

  • Phase II will be underway from January 05 to March 28, 2015.
  • During that period, the Social Hall will be used for all our Masses on the weekends (except 2 Masses in Spanish on Sunday evenings at Nickajack School.)
  • We will not be able to use the Commons nor the Sanctuary during Phase II so that the demolition of the old pews, the pouring of cement for the new configurations designed for the Altar, Ambo, Pews, etc. can take place.
  • The flooring in the Commons will have more carpet to quiet the “din” and the Sanctuary will have an all tile porcelain floor.
  • The new pews will be oak and there will be no upholstery for greater cleanliness and sanitary reasons.
  • New light fixtures for LED lights will be installed. This will be a big help to lower our electric bills. A light engineer and a sound engineer have been consulted. Light bulbs will need to be changed approx. every 15 years. Wow!

Your patience and understanding will be most important to help one another with the changes. It’s not forever. After three months we will have a most beautiful space again to worship our Lord.

Please continue to remain generous in your donations to the Church. This will help us greatly.
Thanks,

Fr. Brian

Church Renovation (Updated September 18,2014)

Church Renovation Update September 18,2014

After much planning and evaluation, we are now preparing for our church renovation project which is planned to begin in early October 2014 with new roofing on the church, upon the completion of drawings and proper permits.

Once the new roofing is completed, including the elimination of the surrounding glass treatment, we will take a pause prior to Advent/Christmas before continuing with the interior renovation. The roofing work should not interrupt any Mass schedules.

In January 2015, we will start the interior work to include:

  • New pews
  • New chairs for other designated areas of the church
  • New ceramic floor surface (carpet tiles in the main aisles)
  • Enhanced lighting to replace the illumination from the surrounding ceiling glass that will be removed due to excessive leaking and design flaws from the original construction design
  • We will also have our sound system reviewed for enhancements, as well
  • There will be some minor modifications to the altar and a new wall crucifix is being added behind the existing altar
  • The current wall series of crosses will be relocated to another, yet to be decided designated, area of the church

This work should take approximately 8 weeks, during which time we will celebrate Mass in the Social Hall with added Masses that will be shorter in length to accommodate the additional celebrations.
